There are a lot of misunderstood information about digital mixing and Pro Tools in general. One of them being, "Mixing in Pro Tools reduces sound quality." Below is a link to a white paper written up by Digidesign to help displace some of the incorrect information. It talks about the 48 bit mixer in the TDM systems and covers 'double-precision' math, bit shifting, use of dither, and summing. It also talks about ways to rethink mixing in Pro Tools TDM systems.

It also talks about mixing "inside the box" and why utilizing a 48 bit mixer enables you to add numerous mixing channels, submix, raise or lower fader levels, or add master faders, all without losing audio fidelity or bit resolution. It also covers the myth about needing to sum your mixes externally to preserve the quality.

(note* LE uses a 32 bit float mixer, so not all this applies to LE)
