Windows

To remove the DAE Preferences in versions 6.x:
Start menu-->My Computer-->Local Disk (C:)-->Program Files-->Common Files-->Digidesign-->--DAE
Delete the "DAE Prefs" folder.

In 5.3.1 it's:
Start menu-->My Computer-->Local Disk (C:)-->Program Files-->Digidesign-->DAE
Delete the "DAE Prefs" folder.

Also in all Windows versions you'll want to delete the Pro Tools Preferences:
Start Menu-->My Computer-->Local Disk (C:)-->Documents and Settings-->Your user folder--> Application Data-->Digidesign
Delete the Pro Tools Preferences.PTP file
You may need to unhide Hidden Files and Folders in Windows first.

Next, go to each hard drive you have and delete the Digidesign Database folder from the root of each drive.
Empty the Recycle Bin and restart the computer.
Mac

Mac Hard Drive-->Users-->users file folder-->Library-->Preferences
Drag to Trash com.digidesign.protools.plist DAE prefs.(the entire folder), Digisetup.OSX and any Pro Tools LE preferences files.

Check all hard drives for-->Digidesign Database-->Volume.ddb and possibly Cache.wfm
Delte those files and/or folders

Trash Databases Folder (if present)
Mac Hard Drive-->Library-->Application Support-->Digidesign-->Databases-->Trash Volumes folder
Empty trash and then restart.

Sometimes Pro Tools doesn't work exactly the way we want it to. It's the nature of the beast that is digital technology. This is one reason that there are constantly updates available for our software. Shit happens...but we try and fix it and move on.

If something extremely odd comes up while you are working with Pro Tools there are some general "techniques" you can do to try and remedy the problem. Of course the first thing to try is to close Pro Tools down and restart it...and if that doesn't work, reboot the system entirely (including cycling the power on your hardware device).
However, there is another "technique" that you will constantly hear on this forum and in other places that is known as "trashing the preferences." There are a few files on your drives that contain general information of how Pro Tools is supposed to work, and sometimes these files get corrupted or just become unstable. Below you will find information on how to correctly get rid of these files both on Mac and PC in an attempt to troubleshoot your problem. Keep this information handy, you never know when a problem might come up...and trashing the preferences is a lot less of a time waster than reinstalling Pro Tools or even your OS.
Before you begin, close Pro Tools first.
